Adding books
LectorTome plays DRM-free audiobooks in M4B, M4A, MP3, AAC, WAV and FLAC. There are three ways to add them:
- Wi-Fi Transfer from a web browser on your computer. It's the easiest, and works for whole folders. See below.
- In the app, tap + › Add Books and pick files or a folder, for example from iCloud Drive.
- In the Files app, or Finder with your device connected, open On My iPhone or On My iPad › LectorTome and drop files or folders in.
A single file is one book; an M4B's chapters are read from the file. For a book made of several files, put them in a folder named after the book and number them so they sort in order (01 Chapter 1.mp3, 02 Chapter 2.mp3…). A folder becomes one book, with a chapter for each file. If several loose files arrive at once, LectorTome offers to group them for you.
Three public-domain classics from LibriVox come with the app, in a Sample Classics folder. Deleted them? + › Add Sample Books puts them back.
Wi-Fi Transfer
- In LectorTome, tap + › Wi-Fi Transfer…; the screen shows an address, such as
http://192.168.1.23:8080, and a four-character code. - On your computer, open that address in a web browser and enter the code.
- Drag folders or files onto the page, or use the Choose a Folder… and Choose Files… buttons.
- Keep the Wi-Fi Transfer screen open until every file says Done. Books appear in your library as they arrive.
The page won't load on my computer
Both devices need to be on the same Wi-Fi network. Guest, hotel and some office networks stop devices from reaching each other. Also check that LectorTome is allowed to use your local network: Settings › Privacy & Security › Local Network › LectorTome.
It says uploads are switched off
After 10 wrong codes, Wi-Fi Transfer stops accepting uploads to keep your device safe. Close it and open it again to get a new code.
A big upload stopped partway
The upload page only runs while the Wi-Fi Transfer screen is open and the app is in front. Keep the screen open, and for large transfers keep your device plugged in. Unfinished files are removed, and files already on the device are skipped, so just send them again.
Listening
- Your place is saved every few seconds, when you pause and when you leave the app.
- Smart rewind steps back a little when you resume after a pause: 3 seconds after a short pause, up to 30 seconds after an hour or more. Turn it on or off with Rewind in the full player.
- Speed runs from 0.75× to 3×. Each book remembers its own; new books start at the speed you chose last.
- Chapters show ✓ listened, ◐ in progress or ○ not started. Swipe a chapter right or left to mark it, or long-press for Play from Here.
- AirPlay: tap the AirPlay button at the top of the full player to play on a HomePod, Apple TV, AirPlay speaker or Bluetooth headphones.
Sleep timer
Tap Sleep in the full player and choose 5 to 60 minutes or the end of the chapter. The volume fades over the last 30 seconds, and the countdown pauses whenever playback does.
- Shake to add 5 minutes. While the timer runs, shake your device firmly, about three quick jolts. It works with the screen locked.
- Chime. A soft chime confirms the shake. Turn off Chime When Shaken in the Sleep menu to silence it.
Your library
- Search by title or author. On iPhone, pull down on the Library to show the search field.
- Sort with the ⇅ button: Recently Played, Title, Author or Date Added.
- Folders: long-press a book › Move to Folder, or drag it onto a folder. Tap Select to move, combine or delete several books at once.
- Edit a book: long-press › Edit Details… to change its title, author or cover. Your audio files aren't changed, and Restore from Audio Files undoes your edits.
- Combine or split: combine separate files into one book, or long-press a book › Split into Separate Books… to turn a collection into individual titles. Your place and bookmarks carry over.
- Background: + › Library Background… for Oak Shelves, Walnut Bookcase, Listening Room, your own photo, or Plain.
Widgets, Siri and Shortcuts
To add a widget, touch and hold the Home Screen or Lock Screen, tap Edit or Customize, then Add Widget, and search for LectorTome. The widget shows the book you're listening to, or the one you played last. Tap play right on the widget, or tap anywhere else to open the player.
Ask Siri:
- "Resume my audiobook in LectorTome"
- "Play book title in LectorTome"
- "Set a LectorTome sleep timer for 20 minutes" (or "to the end of the chapter")
The same actions are in the Shortcuts app.
Troubleshooting
A book won't play, or isn't in my library
Check that it's one of the supported formats: M4B, M4A, MP3, AAC, WAV or FLAC. Audible's .aa and .aax files are copy-protected and can't be played. If you added files through the Files app, pull down on the Library or tap the refresh button.
My chapters are in the wrong order
Files in a book's folder play in file-name order. Number them with leading zeros (01, 02 … 10) so they sort correctly.
The title, author or cover is wrong
LectorTome reads them from the files' tags. Long-press the book › Edit Details… to fix them.
The widget shows an old book or doesn't update
Open LectorTome and play a moment of your book; the widget follows within a few seconds. If you've just installed the app, remove the widget and add it again.
Shaking doesn't add time to the sleep timer
Shaking only works while a timer is running. Give the device about three firm, quick jolts; gentle movement is ignored on purpose, so turning over in bed shouldn't count.
Can I move my library to a new iPhone or iPad?
Restoring your new device from a backup of the old one brings LectorTome's library with it. You can also copy the books across with Wi-Fi Transfer or the Files app, though your places and bookmarks stay on the old device.
