Adding books

LectorTome plays DRM-free audiobooks in M4B, M4A, MP3, AAC, WAV and FLAC. There are three ways to add them:

  1. Wi-Fi Transfer from a web browser on your computer. It's the easiest, and works for whole folders. See below.
  2. In the app, tap + › Add Books and pick files or a folder, for example from iCloud Drive.
  3. In the Files app, or Finder with your device connected, open On My iPhone or On My iPad › LectorTome and drop files or folders in.

A single file is one book; an M4B's chapters are read from the file. For a book made of several files, put them in a folder named after the book and number them so they sort in order (01 Chapter 1.mp3, 02 Chapter 2.mp3…). A folder becomes one book, with a chapter for each file. If several loose files arrive at once, LectorTome offers to group them for you.

Three public-domain classics from LibriVox come with the app, in a Sample Classics folder. Deleted them? + › Add Sample Books puts them back.

Wi-Fi Transfer

  1. In LectorTome, tap + › Wi-Fi Transfer…; the screen shows an address, such as http://192.168.1.23:8080, and a four-character code.
  2. On your computer, open that address in a web browser and enter the code.
  3. Drag folders or files onto the page, or use the Choose a Folder… and Choose Files… buttons.
  4. Keep the Wi-Fi Transfer screen open until every file says Done. Books appear in your library as they arrive.
The page won't load on my computer

Both devices need to be on the same Wi-Fi network. Guest, hotel and some office networks stop devices from reaching each other. Also check that LectorTome is allowed to use your local network: Settings › Privacy & Security › Local Network › LectorTome.

It says uploads are switched off

After 10 wrong codes, Wi-Fi Transfer stops accepting uploads to keep your device safe. Close it and open it again to get a new code.

A big upload stopped partway

The upload page only runs while the Wi-Fi Transfer screen is open and the app is in front. Keep the screen open, and for large transfers keep your device plugged in. Unfinished files are removed, and files already on the device are skipped, so just send them again.

Listening

Sleep timer

Tap Sleep in the full player and choose 5 to 60 minutes or the end of the chapter. The volume fades over the last 30 seconds, and the countdown pauses whenever playback does.

Your library

Widgets, Siri and Shortcuts

To add a widget, touch and hold the Home Screen or Lock Screen, tap Edit or Customize, then Add Widget, and search for LectorTome. The widget shows the book you're listening to, or the one you played last. Tap play right on the widget, or tap anywhere else to open the player.

Ask Siri:

The same actions are in the Shortcuts app.

Troubleshooting

A book won't play, or isn't in my library

Check that it's one of the supported formats: M4B, M4A, MP3, AAC, WAV or FLAC. Audible's .aa and .aax files are copy-protected and can't be played. If you added files through the Files app, pull down on the Library or tap the refresh button.

My chapters are in the wrong order

Files in a book's folder play in file-name order. Number them with leading zeros (01, 02 … 10) so they sort correctly.

The title, author or cover is wrong

LectorTome reads them from the files' tags. Long-press the book › Edit Details… to fix them.

The widget shows an old book or doesn't update

Open LectorTome and play a moment of your book; the widget follows within a few seconds. If you've just installed the app, remove the widget and add it again.

Shaking doesn't add time to the sleep timer

Shaking only works while a timer is running. Give the device about three firm, quick jolts; gentle movement is ignored on purpose, so turning over in bed shouldn't count.

Can I move my library to a new iPhone or iPad?

Restoring your new device from a backup of the old one brings LectorTome's library with it. You can also copy the books across with Wi-Fi Transfer or the Files app, though your places and bookmarks stay on the old device.
